Reuters found in December that at least 16 cities and counties were making unconditional payments to some low-income people, and at least 31 other local governments were planning to do the same at the time. After Oregon lawmakers approved one-time incentive payments in March, there's good news for some low-income workers who will begin receiving $600 checks as early as this week.

Each household will receive up to one payment, as the Oregon Department of Revenue announced last Wednesday that approximately $141.8 million will be distributed to 236,000 eligible families.
"We know that the wealth gap is only going to widen after the pandemic," state representative Rachel Prusak said in March.
"With this legislation, we are reaching out to working families and individuals whose hard work is essential and is the backbone of our economy."
Oregon will deposit about $82 million directly into bank accounts and mail the remaining $60 million to qualified residents, the state government says.

Oregon plans to send all the money by July 1, while Oregon Department of Revenue spokesman Rich Hoover explained that the payments are not subject to state or federal income tax.
To be eligible, Oregon residents must have lived in the state for the last six months of 2020 and claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit that year.
"For most Oregon households who qualify, you don't have to do anything to receive the one-time payment," the Department of Revenue said in a statement.
"Payment will be made by direct deposit or check in the mail. You will usually receive this payment through the refund option you selected on your tax return.
