Folks, Olette has done it again. They have another innovative light in the stable - this time the offering is decidedly small, but powerful, and includes everything you need in a pint-sized gun-mounted light with no frills to imitate. Ladies and gentlemen, discover the Olight PL-Mini 2 "Valkyrie".

Glock 19 Olight

Glock 19 Olight

Unlike the life-sized Beast lamp that Doc Montana reviewed — the Olight Baldr Pro — the little light I have on hand is a neat combination of compact and powerful. With a total weight of 2.57 ounces, the Olight PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie is just over two inches long and an inch and a quarter wide, and delivers 233.46 lumens per ounce of weight for a total of 600 lumens (!) and 2500 candela from its CREE XP- L HD lamp output.

For perspective, let's compare this to the long standing industry standard Streamlight TLR-1 (which I turned on, loved, and still use today). The TLR-1 is 3.39 inches long and weighs 4.2 ounces, and the battery box had to be large enough to hold a payload of two CR-123A batteries, putting the Valkyrie to shame. The TLR-1 also only produces a yawn lumen of 300 lumens, but its intensity is more focused at 12,000 candela. If we take my totally arbitrary but interesting lumens per ounce metric to me, the TLR-1 comes on the table at a dismal 71.43 lumens per ounce. Remember: 5 years ago, the TLR-1 was the leader in light packs; today, many companies, including Olight, offer products that eclipse the trusty old gun light. Times are changing...and Aulette is at the forefront of change.

Despite the great performance, my favorite part of the Olight PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie is Olight's rejection of unnecessary features. Unlike other Olight products I've reviewed, such as the Warrior Mini EDC Flashlight, the Valkyrie offers two settings: on and off. Weapon lights (or any lighting intended for use in high voltage environments) require special qualities: easy-to-implement controls that don't require delicate motor operation and utter simplicity to keep the operator from being overwhelmed with options when he needs to middle. The damn thing turned on and worked. It would be pretty scary in my opinion to need 600 lumens of intense, scorching power to illuminate a threat, then trigger the light only to find it's in 5 lumens "moonlight" mode. No, gun mounted lights need to be clear to operate first - I'm glad to see that Olight didn't cram this pro light with unnecessary features, just say they can.

Speaking of easy-to-implement controls, the Olight PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie has the simplest activation hardware you could ever need: a simple set of paddle switches - one live on each side of the pistol trigger guard for ambidextrous Purpose. A quick press of either switch down sends all 600 lumens of photon love to your target. Another tap turns Valkyrie off. Holding the switch longer than a tap activates the momentary mode, which keeps the light on for as long as you keep your finger on the switch. that's it. No unnecessary flashes or multiple power levels. on and off. I like it.

The Olight PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie offers something no other weapon mount light can say: full shell adjustability. To eliminate the hassle of changing Picatinny rail keys to match your weapon, Olight only offers two keys (although the installed "Glock" key works with every gun I've tried.) and a slip-on housing system innovation patent. Flip the single paddle lever open to mount the Olight PL-MIni 2 Valkyrie to your rail. Then, grab the light body by the "OLIGHT" sign before flipping the lever to the off position, and simply slide the light back and forth to fit you, your grip, and your fingers. A flip of the lever locks the entire job securely in place. This feature ensures maximum ergonomics as well as broad platform compatibility, and it is an effective and elegant solution.

Great EDC combo: a Glock 19 and a PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie, a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian and an Olight Warrior Mini.

FYI, this light cannot be used with the new generation of miniature semi-automatic pistols such as the SIG Sauer P365; these guns usually require a proprietary rail system, although the aftermarket seems to be on the horizon - hopefully Olight will provide a version for these miniature defense guns lamp.

Since the Valkyrie's case is sealed to help it achieve an IPX6 rating for water and dust resistance, the batteries cannot be replaced as they become depleted with use. solution? Make the suction cup rechargeable! Outlet does not use annoying USB ports that are prone to water seepage, corrosion and difficult to clean; instead, they have developed a proprietary system that uses a snap-on washer-style magnetic charger,

Apple Watch, charging the Valkyrie's onboard sealed lithium-ion polymer battery. On the bottom of the charger's blue-anodized case, there's a small built-in light that lets you know the state of charge. It's simple - red means it's currently charging the Valkyrie, and green means the light's battery is fully charged and ready for use. If you need to remove the light from the loader in an emergency, a quick tug can easily remove the loader from the light without worrying about damage.

The battery provides enough power for an hour of continuous use; that's better than the 40 minutes of use of the very similar but laser-rolled Olight Baldr Mini. (For my review of the Olight Baldr Mini on SHTFblog.com, click here.). It takes about an hour and a half to fully charge my PL-Mini 2 battery.

I really like the Olight charging system, but I admit I reversed the polarity of the magnet on the first Olight Baldr Mini and pushed the charging cable back. Frustratingly, the Valkyrie comes with a two-year warranty. I investigated Olight's powers to see how to correct the situation; I will edit this article with the solution provided.

As happens in the world of quick gear reviews, I received this Valkyrie a few days before the flash sale deadline that Olight wanted me to highlight, so I didn't have time to run the lights through a low-light training session or something like that. However, using it around my house and running in the woods at night with my 4Runner has had positive results if used as intended.

Inside the house, the Valkyrie's beams are perfect—bright white, with hotspots covering a 32-inch door frame with about a 15-foot opening. This level of focus provides a useful amount of light in a Goldilocks-sized (not too big, not too small) area that can illuminate home intruder threats at close range. This size beam is great for finding, identifying and blinding bumps at night in poorly lit parking lots or when you're walking your dog in an unlit nearby area.

In the woods, the Olight PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie did an excellent job of illuminating wide areas with a nominal 100m beam range. For those hunting coyotes or bobcats at night with bait (which is popular in these areas), the Valkyrie can easily light up a dog-sized target from about 75 yards away without the added weight of a lightweight shotgun. For nighttime raccoon hunters or the like, the Valkyrie will be just the ticket to provide the light needed to cleanly exterminate "tree raccoon" without making the gun too heavy to lug around while roaming the woods chasing hounds. Adding this tiny yet powerful little light to your varmint gear will make eradicating mice and vermin in low light really a lot easier. A small but mighty light offers options far beyond defensive pistol use and should be considered for a wide range of uses.

Outlight continues to provide innovative and stylish lighting solutions for our lives, and the Outlight Valkyrie PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie is no exception. The Valkyrie is a versatile, low mass, low weight product with amazing light output, making it a great choice for parties that require portability and all-around light output. Currently selling for around $90, it's the world's first tiny rechargeable light with a sliding rail for maximum utility and ergonomics. The quality is very good, the price is great, and I've told the host of other Olight products I use every day will be a solid and reliable choice that will serve you well - no matter what you choose to install.
